Final Step on a box - Atleast 5 seconds

Step on a box - Front View

Step on a box - Side View

I am proud  for challenging myself to try my best in establishing the requirement for extra 5% mark. I think my character carries the right sense of weight while going down to the ground. It portrays well how the body bounces down and up when Mani stepped on the ground from the box. However, I don't think my stepping up the box has been as well done as my stepping down. I used Mani's hands to show his effort in stepping up the box, his body also contributes in stretching up when he got up the box. Mani's legs also helped a lot if showing the weight he carries to push his legs and body up to the box.

Notes: I tried climbing up a stool to see how my legs react while stepping up an object. I also made sure that his legs did not kick through the box while getting up (as it happens a few times while I am animating).

There were many challenges I faced while doing this animation. Firstly my walking cycle looks fine with it walking on the spot. As for this, my character has to move forward therefore needing me to concentrate on how the body and legs move forward together. It took me a few trials of redoing to make it look better and better from how I first start animating. My character's body parts must coordinate and walk naturally is the thing I take note of while doing this animation.

Original - 1 seconds

Top View - 5 seconds

Side View - 5 seconds

Front View - 5 seconds

Overall after completing Project 1, it gives me the idea on animating Mani. It helps a lot for my Project 2. I personally think that this Walk Cycle project is very good in ensuring me to understand the basic animation principles. It assists me in ensuring good sense of weight and dynamics too which I tried my best applying them in both of my projects.

Notes From Class: First approach we had in class in to stand up in class and observe how each and every part of our body reacts when we walk so that we can picture it well in our heads. From there, we then put it to Mani. Even though parts like our heads and bouncing of body is quite minor while walking, it does contributes in making my character walks looking realistic.

The most difficult part I find for this Walk Cycle project will be animating the hands to make it look relax and real. Most of the feedback I get from Mr Douglas is having my hands part looked too stiff. After consultations, I managed to finally make Mani's hands swings smoothly without looking stiff and it look as though he is really walking leisurely with natural swinging hands.

Big Dog Animation}

I think I did a not so bad in this animation as a whole, only the timing I think it is a little off and too fast compared to the original video. I'm sure I did a good job on making it look like it limped then got back his balance which is the starting. The first part of his first few steps was good where his knees were bent well showing it was pushed aside. The dog's upper body which represented by the rectangle polygon was well animated too where it coordinated with how his legs goes. Instead of it being stiff, it bounces well where it was low enough when the legs were bent a lot.

The first picture is a pose where it almost fell with body bent down, putting more weight on front legs.
Second picture is the final pose where it stabilized its balanced with both front legs looking strong on carrying its weight rather than looking wobbly like the first picture.

However, I think the other half end of the video is not well animated as I did not show much emphasize on the weight when he almost fell. The original video also had this little pause when he fell but I didn't manage to achieve that part as my video is too fast.

I also think that I did not do very well for its front right leg. I realized that it did not bent as appropriately as the other legs at the stage when it is about to fall. Though it has the same duration for the original and my video, mine look very rushing for the process where it is falling and the original one look more realistic from it going to fall and get back its balance.

Problems I faced while doing this animation is during the key framing. I redo the animation quite a few times as it takes time for me to get the hang of the key framing part. I tend to mess up the key frames or did not key frame the right pose at the right timing. Then I focuses on key framing it right but did not focus on the duration of how fast pace it looked when it has been play blast. I am rather satisfied with my work, only that I could make the animation look slower paced and more realistic for the legs.

Spiderman Animation}

Description:
From this lesson, I continue learning from poses to animation. By creating poses I understand the need to consider how to make it look realistic thus same goes to animation. We were even taught in class to put ourselves in spiderman's pose. To experience and observe closely how our weight shift from one leg to another and how our other body parts react to it.

So from this animation, I started editing the hips to make it shift to one side and his legs followed accordingly. To make it more obvious, I edited the legs a little bit to make it holds the weight more on one side. The body, hands and head follows by shifting together naturally too. The head tilts from one side to another with a slight nod as that is how I observe myself when shifting my head and body together. By editing the postures, we were taught how to key frame the poses so that it will be saved and can be rendered out into an animation too thus this is the product out of the exercise I did.

What can be improved:
Comments I get from Mr Douglas which I also agreed on is that his shoulders and arms are quite stiff and awkward when he shifts his weight. He look like he have robot hands that he controlled not to move and only moved his hands.

Reflection:
Shifting of weight exercise taught me so much on how and what to emphasize on to show that it is shifting its weight. It made me have this thinking process of which part starts first, follow by which body part will react and how the final pose will be. However I could have done better for the shoulders thus something to take note for my final project since it also involves rotation of shoulders. I think this exercise will help me a lot in my project as walking cycle involves a lot of body parts to move at the same time.

SpiderMan Posing}

Exercise 2
Put Spiderman into TWO other poses. Upload at least THREE screenshots from different angles to your journal, with a paragraph of reflection for each.

POSE 1: HANGING

Description:
From this exercise of making the spiderman hanging taught me the basic pointers to remember in order to achieve a realistic figure of a hanging spiderman. I learnt how important it is to consider the curve of his body and how to bend it nicely from different areas in Maya. The bend of his body initializes how the spiderman holds his weight while hanging upside down so I need to make sure it bends properly. To position his head, hands and legs must also be considered, following how his body is postured.

What can be improved:
His chest being in between his hands look weird to me. Maybe I should have leave a very little space in between them so it does not look as though he is squeezing them hard to hold his weight upside down. This pose should be easy for him as he is a superhero but I think I made him look like he is slightly struggling with his hands that way.

Reflection:
I am really satisfied with the bend of his body as it goes well with his hands pose. His neck is stretched properly displaying his weight at the bottom since he is upside down. His legs too with his knees slightly more to his upper body made him look realistic for being in that position. However I really should do better for his chest area as his hands makes him look funny as though his elbow is squeezing his chest. Problems I faced was making his hands clinched as though he is grabbing his web to stay in this posture. Though I adjusted bit by bit I think I did not make it look very realistic as he looks like he is just holding on it lightly.

POSE 2: JUMP AND THEN SPREAD LEGS

Description:
This pose was inspired from the movie itself where he jumps off and spread his legs to jump off to somewhere else. From this pose, it shows that spiderman is flexible to spread his legs wide. His hands are in front of him holding on to his web and his body is bent to follow the actions his hands is doing in order to look realistic. His head is tilted in a way that he is looking at the direction he is going to jump to too.

What can be improved:
Areas that can be improved would be his shoulders. I think I made his neck and shoulders look quite stiff and it did not bent nicely following his arms. It is as though his arms are free to stretched that way but his shoulders are restricted. Other parts of him I think is fine and I did quite well doing this posture apart from his shoulders.

Reflection:
I chose this pose with the purpose to show the audience how flexible spiderman is. I think I did quite well in stretching his legs appropriately. Problems I faced while doing this pose would be his head, neck and shoulders part. I must carefully rotate them to look realistic and also coordinate well with this hands posture.

POSE 3: SWINGING

Description:
Spiderman is known to shoot out his web to jump from building to building. This pose shows the process of him shooting his web and already halfway jumping off and swinging to another building. I postured his hands spread which one is to shoot and the other just follow along while jumping. If it were to be straight by his sides it will not be realistic and it will look weird plus that is not how naturally a jump pose will look like.

His legs are positioned in a way that his body is forward and the legs are still upwards as he just took off from the building. If his legs were to be the same height with his body it is not well exaggerated to show he is jumping off a building.

Reflection:
I find this position interesting and it is common for spiderman to do this. I find it challenging at first to posture his legs to not look abnormal but I managed to make it look realistic as if he really just jumped off a building and stretching out to webbed to a new one. After practicing on the two previous poses, I managed to do this well. I am satisfied of its turn out and think this is the best posture out of the rest. His body is appropriately bent and as well as his legs. Considering that he just jumped off, his hands naturally spread this way so it look better and having his head tilted to the direction he is going to point his web to too perfect  the whole posture.
